Beyond ’91 – Portrait of the Perestroika generation
Cross-border photo reports from Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine
An exhibition by cafébabel, supported by Advocate Europe and Allianz Kulturstiftung
The last few years of the Soviet Union brought with them not only a “wind of change” – but also an unexpected baby boom. As the Soviet Union steadily imploded, these so-called “Perestroika babies” were growing up on the far side of the Iron Curtain. While becoming teenagers in a society experiencing chaotic transition, they quickly had to learn what freedom really meant to an era of accelerated capitalism and they had to face up to the fact that the countries they’d been born in no longer existed.
Twenty-five years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Beyond ’91 – Portrait of the Perestroika generation lets this generation have their say: 14 young journalists, photographers and filmmakers tell of the tremendous changes the post-Soviet world is experiencing – in the form of a series of seven multimedia, cross-border stories from Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine. The exhibition presents the best photos from the project.
VERNISSAGE: Friday 17th March, 7 pm
The vernissage takes place in the presence of the project participants and will be opened with a panel discussion on the subject „Distorted perspectives – representation of former Soviet states in the media“. Participants in the panel discussion are Gemma Pörzgen, Jens Mühling, Tatiana Kozak and Katherina Barushka. The discussion will be moderated by Julia Korbik from Cafébabel Berlin.
