Sam Auinger, katrinem, Holger Schulze: Sonic Talks

The cities, the buildings, the squares and streets, the cubicles and the commuting zones are the environments in which citizens of today spend most of their times – every day, year after year, for decades. Yet, how one experiences these environments, sonically, sensorially, in moving and idling, in resting and in panicking, is seldomly adressed.

In a series of talks the Sound Studies Lab will explore how selected edifices, areas for commuting, and zones for pausing are experienced – sonically. These talks provide an intense introduction into sonic thinking and also a training in its corporeal and sensory practices – combining a Path of Awareness, prepared and guided by the sound and walking artist katrinem with a series of Sonic Talks in situ between the sound artist Sam Auinger and the sound researcher Holger Schulze.

Sound is in these talks the main approach to analyze, to scrutinize, and to interprete the interactions and the dispositives of contemporary everyday lives.

Sam Auinger (*1956) is a sonic thinker, composer and sound-artist. He is collaborating with cityplaners and architects, giving lectures and is a frequent participant of international symposiums on the topic of urban planning, architecture, media, and the senses. He was a visiting professor at the University of the Arts in Berlin, running the Experimental Sound Design department at the Sound Studies Master Program from 2008 till 2012. Currently he is an associate of the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Since 1989 he works together with the composer Bruce Odland as O+A, exploring the central theme of hearing perspective. Their work is known for large scale, public space sound installations that transform city noise into harmony in real-time. He is also a founding member of stadtmusik, a collaboration between the Berlin-based composers Sam Auinger and Hannes Strobl with the media artist and urbanist Dietmar Offenhuber. Over the years Sam Auinger has received numerous prizes and awards for his work: In 1997 he was awarded the Berlin Artist-in-Residence DAAD fellowship, 2002 he received the Kultur Preis der Stadt Linz to honor his body of work and in 2007 the SKE Publicity Prize. In 2009 he was a scholarship holder of the atelier Berlin at Cité International des Arts in Paris, 2010 he was awarded city sound artist Bonn of the year and in 2011 he was featured artist at the Austrian Ars Electronica Festival.

katrinem (*1969) The examination of sound and space has long been an integral part of katrinem’s artistic work. Comprehensive training in classical music (violin/viola) with constant performance practice (orchestra, ensemble) formed the broad early foundation that led to a specialization in spatial performances and new performance practices. Since 2004, a series of projects concerned with imprints of our gaits in public space, and investigating the interplay of transitory spaces and public sites, have emerged under the title go your gait! For the project GANGARTEN (go your gait! part_6), katrinem received a grant from Linz Export and with gaits in albufeira (go your gait! part_13) was prizewinner of the competition Europe – a sound panorama. katrinem is continually broadening, challenging and refining her individual approaches to the subject of sound and space through exchange and collaborations with artists and researchers such as Sam Auinger, Gernot Böhme, Annea Lockwood, Bruce Odland, Holger Schulze or Penelope Wehrli.

Holger Schulze (*1970) is full professor in musicology at the University of Copenhagen and principal investigator at the Sound Studies Lab. He serves as curator for the Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin and as founding editor of the book series Sound Studies. He is the author of a Theorie der Werkgenese, a generative theory of artefacts in three volumes: Das aleatorische Spiel (2000) − Heuristik (2005) − Intimität und Medialität (2012). He is associated investigator at the cluster of excellence Image Knowledge Gestaltung: an interdisciplinary laboratory at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and founding member of the European Sound Studies Association as well as a guest resercher at the Nordic Research Network for Sound Studies. Since 2011 he is co-editor of the international journal for historical anthropology Paragrana, in 2008 he founded the international research network Sound in Media Culture, 2000-2009 he was a co-founder and the first head of department of the new MA-programme in Sound Studies at the Universität der Künste Berlin. He was invited visiting professor at the Musashino Art University in Tokyo, at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, at the Leuphana Universität Lüneburg as well as lecturer at the Leopold-Franzens-Universität in Innsbruck.
